Gone are the days when healthy eating meant that your meals tasted like cardboard and to maintain your weight you had to weigh your already tiny portion of food. Knowledge is key when it comes to healthy eating for a healthy weight. The two go together like a horse and carriage.

Healthy eating simply means that you make the right meal choices based on how active you are. If you eat a high-calorie diet without necessarily using energy to burn it, you will gain weight and vice versa. It also means that you must try to maintain a healthy diet and eat various foods to ensure that your body is getting all the nutrients it needs to function correctly.

Remember, everything in moderation and your balanced diet must include:

  • Carbohydrates: Are found in cereals, bread, rice, etc. Choose whole grains as they are high in fiber and helps you feel full for longer.
  • Proteins: This food group contains many beneficial vitamins and minerals such as Omega-3 which is vital in preventing heart diseases. Choose between oily fish such as Salmon and Trout. Non-oily fish include Tuna and Cod.
  • Fats: They are two main types of fat. Saturated Fats which are found in foods like Cheeses, butter, lard, etc. Try to cut down on this fat. The Unsaturated Fats are a healthier choice and is found in vegetable oils and avocados.
  • Fruits and Vegetables: It’s recommended to have at least five serves of fruit and vegetables daily. To most of us, this may prove to be a costly endeavor. However, consider dried, canned and frozen options too.

Consuming foods that are high in sugar such as cakes, fizzy drinks, alcohol, and packaged foods can contribute to weight gain. Substitute them with free sugars found in honey. Avoid consuming too much salt as it raises your blood pressure. The recommended intake for adults is 6 grams a day.

Drink plenty of fluids. It is recommended 6 – 8 glasses of water a day.

Physical activity helps you maintain a healthy weight. Look for ways in which you can fit exercise into your daily life. Walking is one sure way that can keep you fit.
